Eric Colonel &#38;amp; Thomas Spit and Friends

A l’occasion de ce 5ème show à la galerie, l’heure est à la joie. L’époque étant ce qu’elle est, l’avenir incertain et les pronostics divinatoires, les artistes Éric Colonel et Thomas Spit proposent de réinvestir le sensible en faisant un détour savoureux du côté de l’imaginaire.

Pendant de nombreuses années, leur travail s’articulait autour d’un art calligraphique qui, à coups de petites pensées décousues et drolatiques, dessinait le profil d’une génération. Leur résidence à l’atelier Pierre Culot, en 2019, marque une évolution de leur mode d’expression. Le texte disparaît des céramiques. Le vase « Citroën » s’anthropomorphise et les émaux deviennent plus riches. L’imaginaire prend le pas sur la narration. Ce glissement de l’incantation vers le tactile dans l’art est dans l’air du temps. Il y a, en partie, une volonté de s’écarter du tumulte de l’agora pour réinvestir un espace plus intime, au contact de son propre imaginaire.

Dans le cadre l’exposition, Éric Colonel et Thomas Spit déclinent un bestiaire naïf et coloré sur leurs médiums de prédilection : céramique, faïence émaillée, œuvres sur papier et sculpture. Ils m’ont dit souhaiter approfondir l’univers d’une crédence de cuisine en céramique installée chez moi. Il est vrai que les singes et les oiseaux qui l’ornent font mouche auprès de mes amis. Après tout, les sentiments de nos amies les bêtes reflètent les nôtres, avec en prime une touche légère et apaisante. Raphaël y trouve même un antidote quotidien à « la manipulation anxiogène de la matinale sur La Première ». C’est dire à quel point l’exposition est d’intérêt public.

Le duo invite également cinq autres artistes aux univers très affirmés, qui les inspirent et avec lesquels ils partagent une vitalité plastique marquée du sceau de l’imaginaire...

MAITE Y MANUELNés en Uruguay, ils vivent et travaillent actuellement à Majorque. Des personnages anthropomorphes peuplent leurs dessins et leurs peintures, comme une sorte de série animée qui exprimerait, par fragments, leurs propres émotions. Pour Maite et Manuel, tout commence par un dessin dans un carnet de croquis — le cœur de leur pratique — où ils travaillent simultanément et sans se parler. Dans un rythme rapide et chaotique qui évite pourtant la collision, ils embrassent le désordre, l’imperfection et l’intuition partagée. Les dessins du carnet sont ensuite transposés sur toile comme structure pour la peinture et l’expérimentation matérielle. Ils recherchent une peinture qui semble en mouvement perpétuel, éternellement fraîche.ȘERBAN IONESCULe travail de Șerban Ionescu s’étend à la sculpture, à la peinture, au design et à l’architecture. À partir de traits maîtrisés et d’un usage vibrant de la couleur, jouant sur de forts contrastes, il insuffle à ses œuvres des formes anthropomorphes et abstraites, teintées d’une touche cartoonesque. Né en Roumanie en 1984, Ionescu grandit à New York à partir de l’âge de dix ans. Il obtient un Bachelor of Architecture au Pratt Institute de Brooklyn (New York) et enseigne comme professeur adjoint à l’École d’architecture du Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute à Troy (New York) de 2010 à 2016. Il a présenté des expositions personnelles à travers les États-Unis et à l’international, notamment à Anvers et à Tokyo.FRANCISCO MENDES MOREIRAFrancisco Mendes Moreira (1979) travaille principalement avec des matériaux de récupération, la peinture à l’huile, les pastels, le collage et le papier mâché pour construire des images intenses et brutes, tantôt figuratives, tantôt abstraites. Son univers est à la fois familier, étrange, comique et mélancolique.Artiste autodidacte, il vit et travaille à Algés, près de Lisbonne. Depuis qu’il a commencé à peindre en 2003, il a développé une carrière internationale.JORDY KERWICKJordy Kerwick (1982), artiste australien autodidacte résidant en France, a créé une iconographie propre : un bestiaire fantastique peuplé de cobras, de têtes de loup, de plumes, de femmes nues et de végétaux. Picturalement, il utilise une grande variété de techniques, allant de la peinture acrylique à l’huile, en passant par la bombe aérosol et le collage. Son travail a notamment fait l’objet d’une exposition personnelle au Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid, Espagne). Ses œuvres ont également été présentées dans des expositions collectives au Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, États-Unis), au Yorkshire Sculpture Park (Wakefield, Royaume-Uni) et au Kunstbygningen Engelund Samlingen (Vrå, Danemark).
Atelier Pierre Culot vs Eric Colonel &#38;amp; Thomas Spit: Round 2

À cette occasion, ils retrouvent l’Atelier Pierre Culot pour une nouvelle collaboration et créént une série limitée de 14 lampes. Invités en 2019 par Joseph Culot, Dimitri Jeurissen et Arnaud van Schevensteen, à effectuer une résidence à l’atelier, le duo liégeois avait trouvé, dans le détournement du vase "Citroën" en sculpture anthropomorphe, un terrain de jeu particulièrement fertile. L’aventure esthétique se poursuit cette fois autour de la lampe, autre totem de l’univers Culot. Avec la complicité de Joseph Culot et de la galerie Alice, Éric Colonel et Thomas Spit peignent le fût de 14 lampes. Comme lors de leur première collaboration, la encontre entre l’univers sobre et élégant du maître céramiste et celui, grotesque et fantastique, du duo donne naissance à des pièces raffinées, où le profil épuré s’anime du mouvement de bêtes colorées. Chaque lampe est unique et livrée avec son abat-jour.


On the occasion of their fifth show at the Gallery, the mood is one of joy. In times such as these, marked by uncertainty and ominous predictions, Eric Colonel &#38;amp; Thomas Spit propose a return to the realm of the senses, taking a delightful detour into the world of imagination.For many years, their work revolved around a calligraphic practice which, through scattered and playful fragments of thought, sketched the profile of a generation. Their 2019 residency at the Atelier Pierre Culot marked a turning point in their mode of expression. Text disappeared from their ceramics. The “Citroën” vase became anthropomorphized, and the glazes grew richer. Imagination took precedence over narration. This shift reflects the spirit of the times. It signals, in part, a desire to step away from the turmoil of the public arena and to reengage a more intimate space, in direct contact with one’s own imagination.For the exhibition, Colonel &#38;amp; Spit present a naïve and colorful bestiary across their preferred media: ceramics, glazed earthenware, works on paper, and sculpture. They told me they wished to further explore the universe of a ceramic kitchen backsplash installed in my home. Indeed, the monkeys and birds adorning it invariably captivate my friends. After all, the emotions of our animal companions mirror our own - yet with a light, soothing touch. Raphaël even considers it a daily antidote to "the anxiety-inducing spin of the morning news on the radio" That alone speaks to the exhibition’s public value.The duo also invites four artists with highly distinctive universes - artists who inspire them and with whom they share a vibrant creative energy...

Invited in 2019 by Joseph Culot, Dimitri Jeurissen and Arnaud van Schevensteen to undertake a residency at the workshop, the Liège-based duo had found particularly fertile creative ground in transforming the "Citroën" vase into an anthropomorphic sculpture.This time, the aesthetic adventure continues around the lamp - another totem of the Culot universe. With the complicity of Joseph Culot and Alice, Gallery, Éric Colonel &#38;amp; Thomas Spit painted the shafts of 14 lamps. As in their first collaboration, the encounter between the sober and elegant world of the master ceramist and the grotesque, fantastical universe of the duo gives rise to refined pieces, where the clean-lined profile comes alive with the movement of colorful beasts. Each lamp is unique and delivered with its lampshade.

Depuis quelques années, nous utilisons nos masques de céramique pour dévelloper un thème ou le concept de nos expositions. Dans le cadre des Belgian Days 2025, nous proposons de créer une rencontre et un échange et un questionnement collectif: “Qu’est-ce qui nous différencie?”Nous proposons 44 masques en céramique émaillées, fruits de notre imagination libre et créative.Les masques dans un style inspiré de folklore et de pop culture seront tous très différents, et pour les humaniser nous leur attribuerons à chacun un prénom.Une moitié des masques aura un prénom féminin, l’autre&#38;nbsp;moitié, un prénom masculin. Nous utiliserons les 11 prénoms féminins et masculins, les plus utilisés en Belgique et à Hong-Kong.Les pièces seront présentées dans divers endroits de la galerie individuellement ou en groupe. Une liste des noms accompagnés d’une&#38;nbsp;photo pour&#38;nbsp;l’aider&#38;nbsp;à identifier les masques dans&#38;nbsp;l’esprit&#38;nbsp;du jeu “Qui est-ce?” ou du&#38;nbsp;livre&#38;nbsp;“Where is Wally?”.Les visiteurs de l’exposition&#38;nbsp;tenteront de les identifier et de les retrouver dans la galerie. Notre approche se veut interculturelle, intergénérationnelle , humoristique et ludique et articulée autour de la rencontre et de l’échange avec&#38;nbsp;l’autre.

For several years, we have used ceramic masks as a medium to explore the themes and concepts of our exhibitions.
As part of Belgian Days 2025, we are presenting a project that invites dialogue, exchange, and collective reflection around the question: “What differentiates us?”
The exhibition will feature 44 glazed ceramic masks, each the result of free and imaginative creation. Inspired by both folklore and pop culture, every mask is distinct in character. To humanize them further, each piece has been given a first name.
Half of the masks carry female names, the other half male names. These names have been selected from the 11 most commonly used first names in Belgium and in Hong Kong, creating a symbolic bridge&#38;nbsp;between cultures.
The works will be displayed throughout the gallery, either individually or in groups. Visitors will be invited to playfully engage with the exhibition through a guide featuring photographs and names of the masks reminiscent of “Guess Who?” or “Where’s Wally?”
The challenge is to identify and locate each mask within the gallery space.
This project is conceived as intercultural, intergenerational, humorous, and playful, while emphasizing the importance of encounter, dialogue, and exchange with others.

Le duo belge Mon Colonel et Spit (Eric Bassleer né en 1974), (Thomas Stiernon né en 1977) remet le couvert pour une troisième exposition personnelle à la galerie Slika : « Jamais deux sans trois ». Une centaine de masques en grès émaillés, tous uniques et portant chacun leur nom, font transpirer dans cette exposition une certaine belgitude. Un ensemble de céramiques qui n’est pas sans rappeler la diversité de leur pays natal, situé entre le nord et le sud de l’Europe, riche de ses trois langues officielles et de son grand sens de&#38;nbsp;l’auto-dérision.

Mais pour certains masques c’est également l’occasion de se présenter sous un autre angle ! Neuf d’entre eux ont le droit à leurs selfies « mal cadrés » peints sur des carreaux de biscuits émaillés. Un travail qui se&#38;nbsp;rapproche davantage des peintures sur toiles et dessins aux pastels gras, bien connus du duo belge. Ils&#38;nbsp;sont dotés de couleurs et de matières intenses grâce à l’utilisation d’émaux et de faïences spécifiques.&#38;nbsp;Ils permettent aux artistes de jouer avec les brillances, le mat, les textures et de conserver ce trait brut et instinctif façon « Mon Colonel &#38;amp; Spit ». À travers cette technique montrée pour la toute première fois à la&#38;nbsp;galerie, les artistes fidèles à eux même, amènent une dimension ludique et joyeuse à l’exposition.&#38;nbsp;Saurez-vous retrouver les neufs masques qui se sont fait tirer le portrait ?

À force de fréquents séjours à Lyon, les deux artistes ont également souhaité partager le concentré de leurs meilleurs souvenirs du «69» ! Trois fresques peintes aux émaux sur des carreaux de céramique montrent la métropole à travers leurs regards : la ville et la rencontre de ces deux fleuves, la bonne chair, les bons moments passés à manger et à boire entre amis, et pour finir le parc de la tête d’or et ses animaux libérés&#38;nbsp;comme un rêve d’enfant. "Depuis 2020, notre travail est surtout concentré sur la réalisation d’ensemble de sculptures en grès émaillé. Nous adorons confronter notre univers contemporain avec cette technique ancienne. Nos sculptures sont chaque fois un clin d’œil ou une réminiscence à la bande dessinée, aux personnages de dessins animés, d’une œuvre brute ou anonyme ou encore des masques traditionnels et folkloriques. La terre est le prétexte au partage d’une même création, la forme est instinctive, l’émaillage est réfléchi même si c’est le four qui mettra le point final de cette rencontre entre nos deux univers et cette sculpture commune.

Nous travaillons le «Paréidolisme», l’art de voir des visages partout, entre nous. Chacun fait une forme en terre qui nourrit l’imaginaire de l’autre. Une approche formelle, que certains diront très simpliste, qui n’est en fait que le prétexte pour nous mener à l’émaillage et à la cuisson qui donneront vie à nos personnages. Cette homogénéité plastique, nous permet de constituer des ensembles, véritables témoins de cette période de créativité. Nous aimons créer l’envie de collectionner, avoir tous ces masques, qui pourraient être le casting du prochain film d’heroïc fantasy, ou de science-fiction.

Pour cette exposition nous présentons plus de 200 sculptures, masques et volumes. Tous ces visages qui nous avaient tant manqués, il est temps de les revoir et de tous s’y reconnaitre, tous un petit peu."

Si elles évoquent aussi bien les faciès qu’on retrouve dans l’Art Brut que les tsantzas des Jivaros, les céramiques rigolardes du duo belge relèvent de l’ignorant style, mouvance du graffiti qui se caractérise par une esthétique brute et sans fioritures, à l’encontre des canons habituels de la fresque. Si le courant favorise initialement l’instinct et la liberté du geste plutôt que la technicité, il semblerait que Mon Colonel &#38;amp; Spit ont habilement réussi à réconcilier tous ces aspects dans leurs créations.

Car derrière les traits naïfs et l’apparence simple de cette multitude de masques se cache une grande maîtrise de la pose et de la pigmentation des émaux, donnant des coloris incroyablement vifs aux lignes nettes et franches. Un travail minutieux qui renforce le caractère pugnace et taquin de&#38;nbsp; cette série de bonhommes fantasques.

Les observateurs les plus attentifs remarqueront çà et là des visages qui ont comme un air de famille : un pingu un peu fatigué, un figurant égaré hors d’une bande-dessinée de Lewis Trondheim, un marshmallow humanoïde, une marionnette échappée du muppet show… L’ethnologue moderne aura tôt fait de se perdre dans la contemplation intrigante et ludique de ces charmantes bouilles qui soutiennent le regard sans broncher, à la recherche d’interprétations savamment humoristiques ou affectueusement confuses.

On en trouve de toutes les tailles et de toutes les couleurs, et l’exposition s’accompagne d’un catalogue contenant un entretien avec les artistes qui vous éclairera, peut-être pas sur un sens à déchiffrer, mais certainement sur leur processus de création à quatre mains et deux têtes.

Débarquant avec leur univers chargé de personnages fantasmagoriques Eric Bassleer (alias Mon Colonel) et Thomas Stiernon (alias Spit) nous plongent instantanément dans une identité désinvolte et saturée d'autodérision dont on raffole.A la recherche de l'identité lyonnaise, le duo s'immerge dans la capitale des Gaules, et retrace sur céramique les découvertes quotidiennes de nos lyonnaiseries culturelles.Curieux, malins, ouverts, et le sourire en coin, Mon Colonel et Spit exposent à la galerie Slika un ensemble de masques, vases, toiles, pierres bavardes et dessins présentant des spécimens en tout genre : du bizarre au drôle en passant par le burlesque la variété des figures qu'ils créent parait sans fin.

Mon Colonel &#38;amp; Spit en collaboration avec Alice gallery


Les résidences organisées par l’Atelier Pierre Culot permettent à des artistes de découvrir l’univers dans lequel vivait et travaillait Pierre Culot. La propriété, réunissant l’atelier et la maison privée, est mise à la disposition des artistes. Le résident est invité à produire une œuvre prenant en compte l’identité d’un lieu où l’on produisait des sculptures et de la céramique utilitaire. Pour cette quatrième résidence, l’Atelier Pierre Culot a invité le duo d’artistes Mon Colonel &#38;amp; Spit.


L’Atelier Pierre Culot s’intéresse aux artistes dont l’univers touche de près ou de loin à la céramique. En juin dernier, ses responsables ont beaucoup aimé l’exposition du duo d’artistes Mon Colonel &#38;amp; Spit, présentée chez Alice Gallery. Intrigué par l’univers créatif de ces deux Liégeois, à la fois généreux et iconoclaste, drôle et décomplexé, l’Atelier Pierre Culot leur a fait une proposition de résidence que le duo a acceptée.

Celui-ci connaissait l’œuvre de Pierre Culot. Passionné par la céramique, Éric Bassleer s’est intéressé à son univers après avoir déniché, sur une brocante, un vase réalisé par l’artiste. À Roux-Miroir, le duo a apprécié la tranquillité de la campagne, prenant plaisir à rencontrer les voisins et les habitants. Mon Colonel &#38;amp; Spit ont également apprécié découvrir l’atelier et son histoire. Le vase Citroën l’a intrigué. Il s’agit d’une création réalisée par Pierre Culot pour le constructeur automobile français, en 1970. 
A l’époque, tout nouveau propriétaire d’une Citroën recevait ce vase en cadeau. On s’est demandé, précise Mon colonel, ce qui pouvait bien passer par la tête des gens lorsqu’ils recevaient ce cadeau. Le vase est à l’origine des 100 pièces dessinées et réalisées par le duo pendant la résidence.

Pascal Slootmakers, céramiste à l’atelier depuis plus de trente ans, a appris aux artistes la technique du moulage. Ceux-ci se sont amusés de certaines particularités du travail de l’émail, lais- sant sur les créations les coulures et autres traces inattendues, habituellement rejetées par les céramistes. Ils rejoignent là une manière de faire de Pierre Culot qui, lui-aussi, appréciait ces petits accidents liées aux charmes de la création. Cent vases ont été réalisés. Chaque pièce est unique. L’ensemble est hétéroclite, à l’image du travail du duo, mais chacune laisse entrevoir&#38;nbsp;l’univers poétique des Liégeois.

The ingredients are the same, but the soup doesn’t taste the same. Those who follow the work of Mon Colonel &#38;amp; Spit notice it immediately, something has changed. But not really. Humor, poetry and drawing always make it a threesome. The key to the riddle is in the title I Can not See Your Face ‘Cause I’m Looking At You. They painted the portrait of their souls from every angle. In a more expressionist style his faces brew ‘pop’ and personal references with only a few words.
